Snorkling in Zanzibar at Mnemba Island, Africa

Zanzibar…. Idyllic beaches, a crystal clear sea and intense blue skies.
Relaxing is the main goal in this paradise , but also ready for some little action? Go snorkeling at Mnemba island for a day!

A trip to Mnemba Island

This snorkeling trip at Mnemba Island can be booked at various places on the island or online.
Usually there is a snorkel set, fruit and water included.
If you go to the “harbor” yourself, you will spend about € 40, – for half a day on the water. If you want to be picked up and returned from your accommodation, the price will increase. It is often possible to negotiate the price, especially if you are with a group. If you can and do want to negotiate, don’t book this trip online in advance. My experience is that almost all locals are open to negotiating about the price.

Fish at Mnemba Island

The experience

Mnemba Atoll (the marine reserve around Mnemba Island) is about 20 minutes sailing from the harbor at Zanzibar.
The water is calm and super clear. Once your snorkel set is on, it is time to jump in the water! You will see many fish species swimming around the coral. And with a bit of luck you will even see sea turtles or dolphins!

If you have never snorkeled before and it is not going well, you can even see many fish swimming with the mask only. So this is certainly a good opportunity to find out whether snorkeling is for you.

After snorkeling you can eat the delicious freshly cut fruit in the boat. If you then feel like going into the water again, there should be enough time for another snorkeling round.

Sand bar in the sea near Mnemba Island

Our guide took us to a sand bar in the sea after we were done snorkeling.
Here we found some starfish and it was also nice to wander around in the water with our feet on the ground. A little less tiring than snorkeling …..

But we took home the highlight of this sandbar stopover: Idyllic pictures!

Also planning a trip to Zanzibar? I have been there after a round trip of Kenya and Tanzania, especially to relaxe before heading home.
But if you have any questions, please contact me. Hopefully I can answer your questions. And who knows, I might even make another blog about it …
