Corvo, Azores, Portugal

Earlier, I told you in this blog about travelling to the Azores and here about the island Terceira.
Now it’s time to blog about the little, but special Corvo.

Rib boat trip to Corvo

You can book a day trip to Corvo when you are on Flores. It is possible by ferry, but going with a rib boat is way more thrilling!
We booked the trip before arriving at Flores, but it is so much easier to do it when you arrive at Flores.
There is no website so we contacted other businesses in Flores by Instagram and Facebook and they gave us a phone number from a neighbour…
So, please believe me, it is best and really easy to book it at the airport of Flores.
You will find information flyers at the airport. Most of the time you can go with them the same day or within the next few days.

But you might think, why a rib boat? Well, because it is an exciting trip. Boating fast on and between de waves. But also you will boat besides the Northern coast of Flores. Boating between rocks, in caves and next waterfalls, before attending to Corvo.

When you arrive at Corvo, you will see some vans. They will bring you to the top, to the edge of the crater Caldeirão. It will costs you only a few euros.

Caldeirão

Caldeirão is what Corvo is about. A crate in the middle of the island. When arriving with the vans at the top you can walk down the crater. Then you can go back up or even walk around the crater.

Ask the driver his telephone number. So he can pick you up to go back down, when there are no vans at the top.

But please note:  At the very top of the Caldeirão, your phone might be out of service. If you walk down the road a few miles you will be able to call the driver.
Just would we have known……It would saved us some stress about making it back in time for the trip back to Flores…..

What else to do on Corvo?

When you are back down the driver will bring you to a restaurant. I think they are helping eachother out this way 🙂 . You can drink, eat something or grab an ice cream.
You can also walk around a bit and you will see some small mills. If you really have enough time left, you can also take a swim at a sand beach.
When you walk around the crater, you probably won’t have much time left.

If you rather prefer a longer visit to Corvo, this is possible. There are some accommodations and a campsite to spend the night.
Then you could choose to walk to Caldeirão from the harbour or see some more of the locals.

To take into account further

Three seasons in a day, it is no joke! Sometimes even in an hour. But after a heavy rain shower you can walk in the hot sun again 10 minutes later. So you don’t have to bring thick clothing, but make sure you bring a raincoat. Preferably breathable, because of the warmer temperature.

The island Corvo is not big, but to big to walk if you booked a day trip. Best is to use the vans you will see when you arrive. If I rememeber correctly, it isn’t even possible to rent a car.
