Bread bowl

When I was in the USA a few years ago, I lunched with a bread bowl. Back home I tried to make it again. But could find a right size bread. And being to lazy to make a bread myself, I’ve never eaten a bread bowl again.
But this week I found the right size bread in store! So time for me to make a bread bowl. I called it “soep in brood” which means soup in a bread.

Different variations

I used a bread from a Dutch Supermarket, the Albert Heijn. It is a small bread, it’s on and about 300 grams. So maybe you can make or find something like it.

For the soup. I choose tomato soup. But you can choose any. Home made or store bought. Choose your favorite!

When you removed the inside of the bread you can leave it that way. Or you can choose to coat the inside and edge. I coated the bread bowl with melted butter with garlic and herbs and with some cheddar cheese.

A lot of options as you see! So read my recipe and than let your imagination do the rest!

Ingredients per person

• 1 small bread of 300 grams
• 3 table spoons melted butter with herbs (for example melted butter, garlic, italian herbs, pesto, sambal)
• optional: cheese (for example cheddar)
• 300ml soup of your choice

Method

For homemade soup. Prepare this first. Making the bread takes bout 20 minutes (incl. oven time) or 5 minutes (excl. oven time).

If you use store bought soup, you can heaten the soup while the bread is in the oven or when you are ready with coating it.

Cut off the crown of the bread and remove the inside. and there is your bread bowl!

I ate the crown and inside in the next days. Else it was way too much bread for me.
But you can also make croutons of it, make a sandwich to eat with the soup or just dip it in the soup.

Smear butter on the inside and edges of the bread.

Optional: Coat the inside with cheese.

If you choose for the cheese option you must bake the bread bowl for 15 minutes on 190 degrees celcius in the oven. This is not neccessary if you only smear with butter.

If I had more cheese in my fridge, I woul’ve also put it over the edges…..

The last step is to scoop the heated soup in the bread bowl and…..
